Children's Shakespeare Garden
& Outdoor Classroom @ Lichgate

In April of 2010, Damayan competed in the Gardens for Good Grant Contest sponsored by Nature's Path Organics and Organic Gardening Magazine.

Over 1,100 supporters voted for Damayan and our project was selected from over 267 outstanding entries to receive a grant valued at approximately $25,000.

Since winning the Gardens for Good grant, Damayan volunteers have been busy creating a new Shakespeare-inspired Children's Garden at Lichgate.

The garden is intended to inspire a child's imagination while encouraging learning through Shakespeare's literary works. With the addition of the Shakespeare garden we hope to engage children in literature, science, math, and ecology. This garden will feature edible fruits and vegetables, root view gardens, worm bins, hop scotch and fairy houses with a Midsummer Night's Dream theme.

In addition to the Children's Garden, the Gardens for Good grant will also help build an outdoor education center. This outdoor classroom will host myriad community events and workshops. With an emphasis on sustainability, and environmental land stewardship, the center will become a hub of community learning.

The Grand Opening and dedication of the new Children's Garden & Outdoor Classroom took place April 16, 2011 and included Breakfast, Live music, Cooking demonstrations, Bee Keeping workshops, Vermiculture demonstrations, Kid's Yoga, Shakespearan Actors, Tours of the Shakespeare Garden and Historic Lichgate.
